“As a child the world looked very different from what it looks like today – big and fascinating but sometimes very suspicious, even scary. It was so many things at the same time, full of randomness and contradictions.”

I build my works Unknown Light by combining my photos with images scanned from old books. The places and landscapes depicted in the pictures that I have collected from the picture books are just as mysterious as the forgotten lives of our ancestors. They exist in their own silent way, they are like untold stories that have been passed on from generation to generation, but they are still constantly present.

Photographic artist Tiina Riutta lives and works in Ylöjärvi. She received her Master of Arts degree from Aalto University School of Art and Design, the Pori Unit of the Department of Art. Her pictures are fictitious and often include elements taken from old pictures. Unknown Light is her ninth solo exhibition. She has also taken part in several group exhibitions.

Thanks to the Arts Promotion Centre Finland’s National Council for Photographic Art and the Arts Council of Pirkanmaa for their support.
