Galleria Huuto Uudenmaankatu

Frank Brümmel studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nürnberg, Germany, from 2002 to 2006. In 2005 he was distinguished with the “Meisterschüler” title. From 2006 to 2008, he studied sculpture at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki, graduating as a Master of Fine Arts in 2008. Since 2010 Brümmel has worked as a part-time teacher at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts. He gives lectures and courses on the use of human anatomy, architecture and stone in contemporary art. Brümmel is a member of several artist organizations, such as Arte ry, where he has acted as a member of Titanik Gallery’s gallery committee since 2009. Since 2012, he has also served as a member of the board. Frank Brümmel lives in Turku with his Finnish wife and two children.

There are three works in the exhibition. The first room of the gallery is completely occupied by a sculpture named Archive of hearts. In the second room, there are two large format stone tablets with text and ornaments.

The idea of the stone tablets is to combine traditional ornaments with current texts. There is, for example, the question “Do you believe?” and the words “looking, feeling, deciding”. A possible follow-up would be “Why always performing?” or “I really want to be honest with you”. All words and ornaments have been carved by hand in the granite. The inner human conflict towards the outer world is brought into question. A human suffers, but there is also hope. Why are we so often not capable of saying what we really think and why do we not act in line with ourselves? The work is like a request to authenticity.

The work Archive of hearts consists of ceiling-high storage shelves. On the shelves, there are hundreds of small wooden platforms. On each platform lies a heart-shaped object made of unfired clay. A collection of the past, present and future of memories, wishes and hopes.

The exhibition has kindly been supported by the Arts Council of Finland and Loimaan Kivi.
