Shadows of Tomorrow

How do we imagine the future in an era of globalization of media, arrival of climate change and prolonged conflicts? How can the city function as a place for non-commercial activity or as material for visual play? How do recognisable forms and stories get constructed, torn apart and re-imagined in collage, montage, text and sculpture?

Shadows of Tomorrow is a group exhibition by five artists from Galleria Huuto, Helsinki, Finland. The works in the exhibition are videos, collages and sculptures. They refer to other works, other materials, other entities, other images. They are formations of personal notions and imaginations of what could be, they merge together materials that initially may seem unfit. In comparison to a single coherent illusory image, hybridising seemingly unrelated elements appears as a suitable way to represent the uncharted future.

Shadows of Tomorrow is also a part of an artist-run exchange project and collaboration between Galleria Huuto, Helsinki and HilbertRaum, Berlin as well as a counterpart to an exhibition ”No Net Working” held in Galleria Huuto last May by artists David Benforado, Kuno Ebert, Hannah van Ginkel, Daniel Wiesenfeld and Clemens Wilhelm.

This exchange strengthens and broadens networks of artists between Finland and Germany and functions as a platform for sharing experiences of managing artist-run and non-profit galleries showcasing contemporary art in its various forms.

The exhibition has been supported by Arts Promotion Centre Finland and Frame
Contemporary Art Finland.

Mökki / \ Дача workshop on Saturday 8th of July at Huuto Uudenmaankatu, welcome! добро пожаловать!
Pop up –show ”One-Room Flat” celebrates 15 years of Galleria Huuto

Yksiö / One-Room Flat
Galleria Huuto Jätkäsaari, Pop-up, 18.2. – 5.3.2017
Supermarket Alternative Art Fair, Tukholma, 23. – 26.3.2017
Art Fair Suomi, Cable Factory, Helsinki, 25.–28.5.2017

At first glance it looks like a one-room flat furnished with white furniture. There is a bed, a coat rack, a table with a chair, kitchen corner, mirror, kitchenware, bags, shelves, carpet, dishes, lamps and plants. The decoration of the room resembles that of a trade fair or a department store display. Yet a closer look at it reveals artworks placed within the installation.

Some of the works take the shape of recognizable everyday objects such as a bag made out of used teabags or a yucca plant made of disposable paper cups. Other works hide within the set: a landscape painting can be found inside a cupboard and a teabag inside a glass is replaced by a video.

Our one-room flat invites the audience to step in and explore its contents. There one can find a family photo album with no people in it, notice the illusionary works within the space or listen to a song depicting all the other works. A seemingly coherent entity turns into a spectrum of details.

Artists:
Pasi Autio, Jesse Avdeikov, Kaarina Haka, Terhi Heino, Aino Jääskeläinen, Beata Joutsen, Kasper Muttonen, Pilvi Ojala, Kaarina Ormio, Paula Puoskari, Satu Rautiainen, Antti-Ville Reinikainen, Hanna Saarikoski, Azar Saiyar, Hans-Peter Schütt, Elina Strandberg, Aleksi Tolonen, Kalle Turakka Purhonen, Pauliina Turakka Purhonen, Marja Viitahuhta, Charlotta Östlund

The group show celebrates the 15th anniversary of Galleria Huuto.

One-Room Flat has been funded by Frame Contemporary Art Finland and Arts Promotion Centre Finland.

One-room flat also takes part in:

GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE

Artists:

A proverb tells us that “the grass is always greener on the other side”, reminding
us that distant locations always appear greater than they are when seen from afar.
But where is this other side in the 21st century?

When traveling physically, one often cannot escape the feeling that places are
becoming more similar, more commodified, more corporate-ruled. The omnipresent
digital medium video travels via internet around the globe and stimulates
international dialogue across borders like no other visual medium at the moment. A
new generation of video artists speaks up:

PROGRAM (92 min)

Jan Sobotka NACH AUSCHWITZ 20 min
John Butler CHILDREN OF THE NULL 5 min
Clemens Wilhelm KIKI THE WAR DOG 23min
Julian Öffler A TRIP TO KIEV 20 min
Julia Charlotte Richter PROMISED LAND 11 min
Dave Sherry THE SAUSAGE ROLL CONUNDRUM 13 min

GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE is a traveling video festival which was initiated by
artist Clemens Wilhelm (Berlin) in 2011.

NO NET WORKING
Galleria Huuto Jätkäsaari Pop up & Pikkujätkä
13.5. – 28.5.2017

All Galleria Huuto’s exhibitions are open also on Ascension Day Thursday 25th May 2017, welcome!

The artist-run space HilbertRaum is pleased to present ‘NO NET WORKING’ at Huuto. Reflecting the diversity of HilbertRaum the five participating artists will show work that is quite different from each other in its artistic approach and the materials used.

In the autumn 2017 it’s Huuto’s turn to take over HilbertRaum with five of its members. We’re looking forward to this opportunity to join forces with Huuto in this exchange of exhibitions and introduce each other’s work to a new audience without the constraints and hierarchies of the commercial art world. And it’s a perfect reason to visit a beautiful, vibrant city!

See you soon in Helsinki!

HilbertRaum:
An independent, non-commercial and artist-run project space running since 2015 and located in Neukölln, Berlin. HilbertrRaum is run by 16 artists, who take turns curating and organizing exhibitions throughout the year. Projects incorporate a broad range of painting, photography, sculpture, video, installation and performance.

The exchange between Huuto and HilbertRaum:
This exhibition is the first part of an exchange project between HilbertRaum and Galleria Huuto. The second part will be an exhibition arranged in September-October at HilbertRaum’s gallery with artists Mikko Kallio, Pasi Mälkiä, Minna Suoniemi, Tatu Tuominen ja Marja Viitahuhta showing their work.

LOUISE D.E. JENSEN (DK/USA)

DOMINIK SCHLIENGER (SUI)

MATTI LUOKKANEN & JAAKKO TOLVI

Thursday April 27th 6-9pm
Galleria Huuto

Tyynenmerenkatu 6, Helsinki

Tickets: 7e

Organized by: Mental Alaska
*********************************************

LOUISE D.E.JENSEN (DK/USA)

Louise Dam Eckardt Jensen is a Danish-American saxophonist, vocalist and composer. She is equally in her element in the claustrophobically dense environment that is New York and the idyllic countryside of southern Denmark. This division can also be felt in Jensen’s music which consists of more gestural melodic explorations and relentlessly intensive, more rough noise experiments.

Jensen thrives in leading roles when it comes to musical assembles. Quite recently she formed a saxophone quartet together with the legendary Tamio Shiraishi, Matt Nelson and Chris Pitsiokos. Her other bands include the Danish no wave-assembly Sweet Banditry and duo The Home of Easy Credit which has also performed in Finland. Jensen has toured extensively in Europe and the United States, playing alongside musicians such as Weasel Walter, Marc Ducret, Jim Black, Kevin Shea, Tim Dahl, Erica Dicker ja Poul Dissing. She runs the Denmark-based record label Marsken Records together with her husband Tom Blancarte.

DOMINIK SCHLIENGER (SUI)

Dominik Schlienger is a composer and researcher originally from Switzerland. At present he is developing technology for spacially interactive music. Schlienger plays the viola in the group FISQ (Free Improvisation Sound Quartet). He also runs trans-disciplinary free improvisation workshops.

At the event in Huuto Schlienger performs his solo viola project “Gfuchtel” (”Waving vigorously about”). The concept is based mostly on improvisation and utilizes effect pedals and loopers. The electronic viola has been tuned lower than usual, almost down to a pitch reminiscent of the cello.

MATTI LUOKKANEN & JAAKKO TOLVI

Matti Luokkanen is a saxophonist who focuses on the variety of forms improvised music can take. His approach to music ranges from the energetic eruptions of free jazz to abstract sound collages and the melancholic landscape of northern Finland.

Matti Luokkanen is a drummer who focuses on the variety of forms improvised music can take. His approach to music ranges from the energetic eruptions of free jazz to abstract sound collages and the melancholic landscape of southwestern Finland. Tolvi has specialized in plagiarism.

In the past Luokkanen and Tolvi have played together mostly Thelonious Monk’s compositions. The concert at Huuto will be the pair’s first performance as a duo.

Liquid quartet dance-concert at Huuto Jätkäsaari 14 Oct 2016 at 7 pm.

Liquid quartet live at Galleria Huuto
14 Oct 2016 at 7 pm.

Liquid is a music quartet composed of two dancers and two musicians. The group’s
special feature is that the dancers think and behave as instrumentalist, producing
visual music and interacting with the musicians to create unique sound flavours and
to literally project the music in the third dimension of space.

The very special feeling and understanding between the members of the quartet
create a magical oneness, allowing them to constantly cross the boundaries of
traditional dance and music performance, re-imagining the relationship between
dancers and musicians on stage.

A Liquid concert offers an experience where senses merge, where beauty and elegance
create a mesmerizing and multi-layered visual and auditory performance.

Liquid is Giorgio Convertito (dance), Moritz Cartheuser (electric guitar and
effects), Libero Mureddu (piano and keyboards) and Terhi Vaimala (dance).

4 O’Clock TEAS on Saturday 10.9.2016

We, Outrider artists and friends, welcome your company at 4 O’Clock TEAS
in Galleria Huuto, on Saturday, 10th Sept at 4pm.

A starting point for conversation could be “*I forgot the future*”,
echoed in Fiona O’Dwyer’s work on exhibit in Huuto gallery, 10-26th Sept.

huuto-4oc-invite

Fiona O’Dwyer’s exhibition *I Went Up the Mountain With Someone Else’s Story and Came Down
With My Own* centers around the idea and reality of Human Movement: taking as a starting point,
her connection to her family’s migration and displacement in 1950’s Ireland. Her ideas are articulated
through the works’ performative nature, its relation to place and time, and its materiality.

*”What comes through as a result are echoes of a distant space in time, transposed from real points
on a landscape in which a narrative or sound once existed and was played out.*

*What has become evident however is that I* forgot the future* and so it goes on.”
*O’Dwyer, 2016

outrider-artists-logo

*Outrider Artists *came together in County Clare, Ireland, in 2009 around a common wish to be instrumental
in directing and expanding the possibilities of our (individual) art practice and international experience.
To this end, we decided to adopt a loose framework that could work around ideas of friendship, hospitality
and generosity where a value is placed on pooling resources, sharing knowledge and providing peer support
to one another.

We wish to build conversations and exchanges with other artists and curators from around the world who
are motivated by the pleasure and potential of making, sharing and conversations.

Our interactions so far are organised around residences and exhibitions and meeting with MoKS (Estonia),
SERDE, (Latvia), Dr Igor Calzada, (Basque Country), Andri Ksenofontov, Sirp (Estonia), Lemit Kaplinsky,
Tartu Print and Paper Museum (Estonia) and many others to date.

International presentations include;
SALT, Estonia 2011. Liquid/Outrider Zine, Estonia 2012/13.
Group Exhibition, Merriman Summer School Ireland 2012.
Solo exhibition, Tartu Centre for Creative Industries, Estonia.
Solo Exhibition, Gallery Metropol, Tallinn 2013.
Liquid/Outrider+ Group Exhibition, Tallinn 2014.
Friendship Calendars with Vedelik

Outrider Artists have had residencies at MoKS in Estonia and have created work with Evelyn Müürsepp.

We have participated in peer to peer workshops with SERDE and MoKS in The
Future is Domestic! Clare, Ireland 2013.

*The work of Outrider Artists embraces self-organization, chance and shared potentiality ad infinitum.
So we welcome the opportunity to research new models through the process of sharing through the
materiality of embodied creativity with others.*

*4 O’clock TEAS is an extension of our working into wider community interaction through re-appropriation
of domestic as site.*

ALAN LICHT & TETUZI AKIYAMA

Alan Licht & Tetuzi Akiyama – electric guitars

Since the late 80s, Alan Licht and Tetuzi Akiyama have followed parallel paths in blurring the boundaries between rock and experimental music. Each collaborated early on with an elder statesman of the respective New York and Tokyo noise rock scenes (Licht with Rudolph Grey, Akiyama with Keiji Haino) and went on to define their own styles in various solo and group formats. On their most recent duo outing ‘Tomorrow Outside Tomorrow’ their shared sensibilities are intact, as Akiyama’s wobbly tones mesh with Licht’s oozing feedback. Ambarchi and cornetist Rob Mazurek were contacted to provide overdubs, making for two separate trios; the results were released by Editions Mego this spring.

Licht & Akiyama’s European tour is organized by Sound in Motion / Oorstof.

LAU NAU

Lau Nau is Laura Naukkarinen who lives on Kimitoön. She composes minimalistic folk worlds, film music and curious manouvres bordering on the edges of sound art. Lau Nau gigs around the world and this concert will be a starting point for her upcoming USA West coast tour. On Äänen Lumo Spring Festival Lau Nau performs deconstructed versions of her compositions, leaving space also for improvisation, builds pillows made from sound for the listeners can rest on.

Lau Nau eli Kemiönsaarella asuva Laura Naukkarinen säveltää minimalistisia folkmaailmoja, elokuvamusiikkia ja uteliaita koukkauksia nykymusiikin ja äänitaiteen rajoille. Lau Nau keikkailee ympäri maailmaa ja Äänen Lumon konsertti on lähtölaukaus hänen USA:n länsirannikon kiertueelleen joka alkaa seuraavalla viikolla. Äänen Lumon Kevätfestivaalilla Lau esittää pieniin osasiin purettuja versioita sävellyksistään jättäen tilaa improvisaatiolle, rakentelee äänityynyjä joilla kuuntelijat voivat levätä.

MYTTYS

Heta Bilaletdin – electronics, vocals
Samuli Tanner – electronics

MYTTYS = wavering dingdond-beats, static, murmur, shamelessly sugary melodies, singing, surprise-audio, smudge, pop and bombs.
“Samuli Tanner and Heta Bilaletdin beating on small samplers and synthesizers.”
The duo has released two albums: ‘Paksotal’ (Guggenhavn Archive 2014) and the new ‘Sloggilukio’ (Oma333 2016).

MYTTYS = huojuvia dingdong-biittejä, kohinaa, mutinaa, häpeilemättömän sokerisia melodioita, laulua, yllätys-audiota, suttua, poppia ja pommeja.
“ Samuli Tanner ja Heta Bilaletdin hakkaavat pieniä samplereita ja syntikoita. “
Duo on julkaissut 2 albumia: ‘Paksotal’ (Guggenhavn Archive 2014) sekä tuore ‘Sloggilukio’ (Oma333 2016).

TOMMI KERÄNEN & TOPIAS TIHEÄSALO

Tommi Keränen – electronics
Topias Tiheäsalo – guitar

Tommi Keränen has been actively making noise since the 1990’s. With over 30 releases and countless international gigs under his belt, Keränen has established himself as a heavyweight name in the Finnish legacy of noise. He has worked and continues to work with. Paal Nilssen-Love’s Large Unit, Japanese noise legends Incapacitants, Norwegian Testicle Hazard (duo with Lasse Marhaug) and Finnish improv thrash metalists Pymathon (with Tiheäsalo). He describes his style as “slippery”.

keranen.anoema.com/
soundcloud.com/tommi-keranen

For the past 15 years Topias Tiheäsalo has been performing improvised music in festivals and concerts in Finland and around Europe. He plays free improv, jazz, noise and improvised thrash-metal both solo as well as in bands like Jooklo Quartet and Pymathon. He also makes live music for silent film screenings and collaborates regularly with improvising musicians, dancers and poets. Together with his four musician friends in Turku, he currently runs Himera: an association for experimental music, free jazz, improvised music and free rock organizing gigs, festivals and workshops.

SEIJIRO MURAYAMA & JEAN-LUC GUIONNET

Seijiro Murayama – percussion, voice
Jean-Luc Guionnet – alto saxophone

Japanese percussionist Seijiro Murayama entered the public eye performing explosive noisy rock in Keiji Haino’s Fushitsusha and KK Null’s APN. More recently Murayama has focused on so-called non-idiomatic improvisation, electroacoustic composition and plural disciplinary collaboration. Murayama’s stripped down instrumentation and technique brings to attention his utmost concentration and attention to detail.

Jean-Luc Guionnet is a French saxophonist, organist, improvised and composer. Guionnet is known from groups like the Ames Room with Will Guthrie and Clayton Thomas; his duo with Toshimaru Nakamura and collaborations with e.g. Eric La Casa. Guionnet’s command of his instruments allows his sounds to mutate effortlessly from one to another, making use of the vast possibilities of his instrument’s coloristic techniques and large dynamics.

The duo of Murayma & Guionnet is possibly one of the most exciting ones currently working in the field of acoustic free improvised music.

TUUKKA HAAPAKORPI

Tuukka Haapakorpi plays digitally processed sequences of synthetic instruments in order to achieve results related to contemporary improvised music, drone or South Indian raga-music, employing depersonalization and impersonality as an approach to synthesize extended technique.

OLLI AARNI

Olli Aarni’s music resembles a handcrafted minimalistic weave left gathering dust behind a couch. Aarni focuses on timbral characteristics and free meter rhythms. His mainly electronic, collaged sound worlds range from deep hum to stumbling noise – or get stuck wandering somewhere in between. Aarni has released around 20 titles, mostly on tape, in Finland and around the globe.

The time of someone waiting is…

The time of someone waiting is…
Galleria Huuto Jätkäsaari – Pikkujätkä
13th Feb – 28th Feb 2016

We will see wall paintings made by Iraqis in Jätkäsaari in February. Galleria Huuto invited the visual artist Heidi Hänninen to curate an exhibition of asylum seekers to Pikkujätkä. Hänninen has been supervising a wall painting workshop as one of the volunteers in Koskela reception center since October 2015. The workshop has resulted in paintings on several floors of the reception center, describing among other things the far away home country and homesickness.
In the process painting exhibition in Pikkujätkä, ink paintings will appear on the walls of the space during the hanging week and later during the opening hours, telling about continuous and tormenting waiting that echoes from all the walls more or less the same every day, always with the same colour, as black lines in different thicknesses against as empty background as always. The painters of the exhibition are participants of the wall painting workshop in Koskela reception center.

Waiting for the unknown future…
…it feels so bad to wait:
like something is dying inside, all the time,
every day feels like dying
one more time.

“When I feel the fire inside I go to smoke, it’s the only thing that can calm it down.
Sleeping and eating just keeps me alive.”

We are waiting for the sun to rise in this dark finnish winter,
sometimes it’s shining but not for long time – and it ends soon.

It’s not affecting, we can’t feel it, it’s only the light…

…and the bad finnish news prevent the heat of the sun to arrive to you.

“When I was in a jail I was waiting for the day to be free again…
And now when I’m free – and I’m “safe”, I don’t feel the real freedom and safety”.

…I’m waiting….For the startpoint to build our life (again),

the promises from the finnish government – and the well treatment from the finnish people.

Everything goes away, humanity, that they were talking about – it disappeared.

Where is it? Where are the good news – I’m waiting.

There is no more humanity in this world?

…Was it just a lie? But I believed it.

…I’m here, still waiting.

Eight of Swedish Poet Karin Boye’s beloved poems gets new music composed and sung by Emma Augustsson, arranged by Anton Svanberg and surrounded by instrumental improvisations. Boye’s (1900-1941) works and life continues to inspire and fascinate more then 75 years after her death and the themes of love, desire and mans relation to nature that she often return to in poetry and prose are of course as relevant today as ever.
In this process of setting her poems to music the text are in main focus and the music switches between

Artist’s talk on the exhibition Coalworks, 16.1.2016

Warm welcome to the artist’s talk on the exhibition
Coalworks
Kristiina Koskentola
16.1.2016 15.00 hrs
Galleria Huuto / Jätkäsaari
Tyynenmerenkatu 6, Helsinki

In her talk Koskentola will discuss her installations Rituals to Mutations (2013), and Blackballing (2013) which comprise her current exhibition Coalworks in Galleria Huuto / Jätkä 1.

In these works, which were produced in China, the artist is engaging in direct dialogue and negotiation with her social environment, interacting and departing from specific socio-cultural conditions, moments in time, materiality and rituals. Delving into the relationships between the human and non-human, the material and the immaterial, and the social and the (global) political Koskentola will reflect on the importance of local knowledge within her practice and on the ways her installations might allow meaning to traverse cultural geographies and other realms.

Talk is conducted in English.

Boutique Art Couture goes Gislaved, Sweden, 5.12.2015 – 17.1.2016

Boutique Art Couture
Gislaveds konsthall, Sweden
5.12. 2015 – 17.1. 2016

Galleria Huuto’s project, art clothing store Boutique Art Couture is now exhibited in the Gislaved art hall in Sweden. The project has been previously exhibited in Galleria Huuto Jätkäsaari and Supermarket – Stockholm Independent Art Fair.

Boutique Art Couture clothing store sells clothes and other utility art made by participating artists. They are sculptors, performance artists, painters, graphic designers – and there is even one fashion designer who has also worked as an art curator.

The intention of the art cothing store is to bring art closer to daily life. We want to put forward a reminder: there is art in our lives, as long as we see it. We want to lift up the more worldly sides of art: how art is sold and bought despite its spiritual nature, and what happens when art is taken out of its frames, where it is sometimes forgotten. Our intention is not to play designers. Rather, we want to show examples of where art can exist in our lives and provide alternative uses for artistic abilities.

The exhibition space is built as a clothing store with a mirror and a dressing room. Our goal is to sell at least part of the production with the kind of prices that allow the pieces to be spotted on the streets. There are many unique creations in the store, but also easy purchases, as well as other utility art.

There will be wearable sculptures, striking evening dresses, performance costumes, quotidian performance – and skateboards.

The Art Couture project consists of works by over twenty artists. The project has been shaped by Kaarina Ormio from Galleria Huuto, who also gathered the participating artists from inside and outside of Huuto.

Artists:

Anders Bergman, Veikko Björk, Marina Ciclar, Maria Duncker ja Max Latva, Kaarina Haka, Liisa Kanerva, Elina Katara, Karolina Kucia, Marjo Levlin, Małgorzata Markiewicz, Kasper Muttonen, Pia Männikkö, Aava Nietu, Kaarina Ormio, Mimosa Pale, Mari Prekup, Teemu Salonen, Hans-Peter Schütt, Eero Tiittula and Raita Virkkunen

The exchange – Found in transalation

Galleria Huuto (Helsinki) and the project space Scotty Enterprises (Berlin) are engaged in an artistic exchange, based on a process of translation of imagery. Each artist constructs a work that references a work of one of the artists from the other gallery. Thus, on exhibit are the works resulting from this process of translating, interpereting and being inspired by images, ideas, themes, thoughts and notions.

The title ”Found in Translation” is a reference to the idiom ”Lost in Translation”. Replacing the word “Lost” with the “Found” we wish to embrace the idea of interacting with the unknown: the method of the exchange defies the concept of definite meanings and interpretations in artworks.

The counter exchange exhibition of this collaboration was shown 9.-25.5.2015 at Galleria Huuto in Helsinki. The artists participating in the exchange from Scotty Enterprises are Charlotte Bastian, Kiki Gebauer, Simone Häckel, Julia Krewani, Christine Niehoff, Claudia Schoemig, Karin Schroeder, Annette Sonnewend, Linda Weiss, Bettina Weiß and Juliane Zelwies.

Welcome!

The exchange:
The project space Scotty Enterprises (Berlin) and Gallery Huuto (Helsinki) are engaged in an artistic exchange. The collaboration is based on a process of translation whereby each artist constructs a work that references a work of one of the artists from the exchange group.

We are pleased to introduce the first part of the exchange project at Gallery Huuto, Helsinki from May 8th to May 22nd 2015. The counter exchange (Helsinki – Berlin) will be shown from September 9th to October 17th 2015 at Scotty Enterprises in Berlin.

The artist members of Huuto participating in the project are Mikko Kallio, Kasper Muttonen, Kaarina Ormio, Paula Puoskari, Satu Rautiainen, Antti-Ville Reinikainen, Miia Rinne, Maiju Salmenkivi, Eero Tiittula, Aleksi Tolonen and Marja Viitahuhta

Found in Translation:
Found in Translation, the title of the exhibition, is a reference to the idiom ”Lost in Translation”, which often is used as a means to express the things that are missed in meaning when translating a message from a language to another. It also references the Sophia Coppola film Lost in Translation, a visually poetic interpretation of the protagonists’ experience of being isolated in an unfamiliar culture.

Ludwig Wittgenstein famously remarked that “The limits of my language means the limits of my world”. A sentiment mirrored by George Steiner in After Babel with his comment that “Every language is a world, without translation we would inhabit parishes bordering on silence”. For Steiner, translation is paramount: “To understand is to decipher. To hear significance is to translate.”

The babylonian confusion resulting from isolation owing to diversity of language and culture requires translation in order to bridge such differences and create a common understanding of ideas and art practices.

Replacing the word “Lost” with the “Found” we wish to embrace the idea of finding new meanings and interpretations when interacting with the unknown, when collaborating with someone you did not know before and when letting the works speak for themselves, or when creating your work as a response to something you see.

Discussion:
We invite you all to an open discussion at the Goethe Institut, Helsinki (Salomonkatu 5 B) on Saturday the 9th of May at 12.
We will present our project, and talk about the way we have dealt with the issue of artistic exchange. We will also discuss the forms of artist run spaces and their impact on the local art scenes of both Berlin and Helsinki.  The discussion is open to all who are interested in these subjects, and will mainly be held in English.

Scotty Enterprises:
Scotty Enterprises is an artist-run space and organization of currently 15 artists living in Berlin. The space was established in 2007 in the smallest apartment building existing in Kreuzberg, Berlin.

The programme consists of monthly exhibitions, performances, screenings and co-operations with other artist-run spaces. We are non-commercial, independent and non-hierarchical. We support artistic autonomy. We are surrounded by a wide range of artistic practices, which we consider special, unique and worth showing and wish to give them a platform. The selection of what is exhibited is based solely on a collective consensus of the artistic quality.

The Kunstverein Scotty Enterprises e.V. is primarily funded by monthly contributions of its members.
