DIVING IN THE WIND; A LIFE OF DREAMS; AND THE TRAIN OF A THOUSAND CARS

24.6.-12.7.2009

Pictures

There are drawings and paintings of three artists on display. The artists take a look at the things we want to hide from other people. What and who dare we not face? Do we need someone else in order to live freely, without running away?

Liina Mäki-Patola

I often feel that dreams are more real than daytime life. Nightmares remain in the subconscious and appear as flashbacks. Old dreams, too, come back to my mind every now and then. In addition to dreams, I’m inspired by stories, and I wonder what true reality is like.

Saara Maria Piispa

I recently emptied some boxes in an attempt to find out what I have. I piled things on a big table wondering what I need all the things for. I noticed that I’m unable to organize things; yet I know where they are. Life consists of things that survive in stories or backyards, homes, piles, and places of storage. I wondered whether there can be two piles, if one is not enough. When I’m drawing, where is everybody else?

Simplicity and repetition are present in all of my works. My works are an expedition into the ordinary; wrinkles and scratches don’t matter. I’ve never used the mangle.

Kati Roover

In the countryside, I always discover something new, something I haven’t noticed before. It can be harder to find new things in the cityscape, as everything is strictly defined and measured. I dream of a world where the human being is a part of the nature and not artificially above it. Reality cannot be changed, but my imagination allows me to explore that strange and idealistic world. Along with me on my expedition I take old photographs, a book of fables, and mythology.

THE RESEARCH CENTRE OF ORDINARY PEOPLE

24.6.-12.7.2009

The Research Centre of Ordinary People, founded by the Humontologic Society of Finland, ceremoniously opens 24 June, 2009, at 6 pm. The centre was founded to support the seminal human ontology research, launched by Maria Engel, head of the research group.

The research centre will be open to the public to promote the field of humontology and its achievements. Visitors can participate in Engel’s latest experiment or watch tests being carried out.

Engel has studied the development of Moral Intelligence for a long time. In fact, Moral Intelligence has become one of the most central terms of humontology. It refers to behaviour that is tolerant as well as socially and morally acceptable.

In her current research project, the Playground Theory, Engel studies the effects of culture on the development of Moral Intelligence. The humorous name of the project originates from Engel’s discussion on whether our behaviour goes back to childhood times at the playground. Among other places, Maria Engel has studied cultural effects in Bali, Indonesia.

Anyone interested in taking part in the research project can sign up beforehand by contacting research assistant Niina Tanskanen, tel. +358 41 4372414.

The research centre project has been kindly supported by Miskin Foundation, AVEK (The Promotion Centre for Audiovisual Culture), Visek (The Promotion Centre for Visual Arts), TOP-Säätiö foundation, the Arts Council of Finland, the Arts Council of Varsinais-Suomi, and the Varsinais-Suomi Regional Fund of the Finnish Cultural Foundation.
